BILLED AS THE "LAST OF THE OLD WEST", Jackson Hole is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming. The upper valley of the Snake River, or 'hole" as the early trappers called valleys, is about 70 miles long and 10 miles wide. It is rimmed on the north side by the Pitchstone Plateau of Yellowstone National Park, on the west side by the Grand Teton range, the east side by the Gros Ventre (Gro Vont) range, and on the south side by theSnake River range of mountains. The Snake River runs from the north to south through the valley, winding through flat meadowlands interspersed with stands of fir, lodgepole pine and aspen trees. Jackson's altitude is approximately 6,200 feet above sea level. The alpine climate results in four distinct seasons. During recent years the coldest temperature recorded was -36º F on December 12, 1990 and the warmest was 95º F on June 25, 1998. Snowfall ranges from 88 to over 400 inches per year depending on location.
THE VALLEY HAS THREE MAJOR BANKS and several private mortgage companies that handle the bulk of the real estate financing. All these institutions offer very competitive interest rates. Rents, not including utility costs, range from $600.00 to $2,000.00 per month, depending on size, location, and condition of the home or apartment. The continuing strong demand for rental housing creates a consistent shortage of rental units including apartments, condominiums and single-family homes.
BESIDES THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN TOWN, there are four outlying grade schools within Jackson Hole, which are located in Wilson, Moran, Kelly and Alta. However, all children of Junior High and High School age are transported by bus to Jackson each day for school. All the schools employ excellent teaching staffs, and offer students broad exposure to athletics and the artistic, creative, industrial and commercial fields.
VALLEY RESIDENTS ENJOY the atmosphere and friendliness of a small rural community, as well as the great natural beauty and many out door activities the valley affords-hiking, boating, hunting, fishing, scenic and whitewater float trips, and mountain climbing; plus the winter sports of snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and alpine skiing at three major ski areas just minutes from town. The development of these three areas helped establish Jackson Hole as a world-famous skiing center as well as an unrivaled all-season recreational resort area. A myriad of other activities makes Jackson an excellent place to raise children and enjoy close family harmony.
